Slow Science Hikes is a Young Academy hiking group offering academic staff an opportunity to meet and chat in a relaxed, interdisciplinary setting. Every two months, we get together in the vicinity of a Dutch university and go for a walk of between 10 and 20 kilometres. Anyone employed at a Dutch university is welcome to join us. The Young Academy endorses the Academy's recent statement ‘Research knows no borders: Preserve the open science system.’ In its statement, the Academy argues that international research talent should be nurtured while pursuing a well-considered language policy. The Young Academy recently sent out a call for nominations of new candidates for membership of its society. Those eligible to submit nominations have until 16 June to do so. Although the gavel was already transferred symbolically during The Young Academy's members' day last week, the official Board change actually took effect last Monday, 1 April 2024. The Young Academy is welcoming ten new members. They will be officially installed by Marileen Dogterom, President of the KNAW, on 26 March 2024. At this celebratory gathering, we will meet the new members and hear, among other things, what ambitions they have for their five-year membership. On the afternoon of 2 February 2024, the hall at the Trippenhuis was packed when Sanli Faez, chair of the Everyone Professor! working group, opened the proceedings. He explained how the working group, made up of members of The Young Academy, had been active since 1 April 2023 and had held talks with various parties. Marie-José van Tol (chair of The Young Academy) and Kees Storm (Eindhoven University of Technology) are the winners of the Academy Kiss [AcademieKus] for 2024. The General Education Union (AOb) makes the award each year on Valentine’s Day. The jury was greatly impressed by the winners’ commitment to the Everyone Professor!
