She is particularly interested in grieving after a sudden or violent loss, for example due to an accident, murder, disaster or suicide. Using smartphone diary entries, she charts fluctuations in grief in daily life among adults, adolescents and parent-child pairs. This information helps her gain new insights into how grief evolves in individuals and families, why grief symptoms fluctuate over time, and how grief is passed on within families. In addition, Lenferink develops and evaluates innovative treatment programmes for the bereaved. One focus of research is whether digital interventions can provide accessible and effective support to bereaved persons. Her research contributes to a better understanding of grief and helps improve support for the small group of people who struggle with disturbed grief after a loss.
