Beate Völker researches the influence of contexts on social network patterns.

A popular explanation for the decrease of cohesion in modern societies is that social norms became vague. An alternative explanation, however, is the change in social contexts where people meet each other. The composition of these contexts influences networks and individual behaviour. For example, the geographical distance between contexts has increased during the last decades and people select network members from many contexts. The quality of social networks is not per se affected by these developments.

Völker researches the influence of contexts on social network patterns. Ultimately, she wantw to know how social contexts have to look like for facilitating prosocial behaviour and cohesion.
